Crockpot Black Bean Chili Recipe
My Crockpot Black Bean Chili recipe has stood the test of time. I’ve been making this chili for more than 40 years.
When I was learning to cook I followed the directions explicitly on the back of the Chil-O seasoning packet. As my cooking skills improved, my recipes tend to evolve. This is my own recipe creation for canned black bean chili. My family always loves this meal.
My easy black bean chili recipe is for folks like me who do not care for spicy hot food. The most heat in my ingredients is the chili powder. This recipe does not come out so spicy hot that it burns your tongue or makes your eyes water.
Crockpot Black Bean Chili Ingredients
- (1) 28 oz. can of tomato puree
- (2) 14.5 oz. cans of your favorite diced tomatoes, undrained
- (1) 14.5 oz. can of undrained Black Beans, like these
- 1 lb. ground sausage
- 1 lb. ground turkey or ground beef
- 1/4 cup Chili powder
- 1 tsp. salt
- Optional: 1 medium onion diced
Printable recipe card below
Directions
Step 1
With the crockpot set to high, pour all of the tomato products and the black beans into the pot and stir. Cover with lid while you prepare the meat and seasonings.
Step 2
While the bean mixture is heating up, cook the meats. In a large skillet, brown and drain the sausage and the ground turkey. I brown them separately but you can cook them together if you like.
Step 3
Now add the cooked meat and seasonings into the Crockpot and stir well into the tomato and bean mixture.
TIP
If you want more juice in your Chili, add Chicken broth until you reach your desired consistency. You can use water, but it doesn’t add the flavor that chicken broth does. See my recipe for making your own chicken broth to keep in the freezer.
Step 4
Turn the Crockpot down to low and allow to simmer for 6 to 8 hours. Serve and enjoy!
Chili is delicious as is but we also enjoy adding a dollop of sour cream and some shredded sharp cheese as toppings. If you can take the heat and you didn’t add hot sauce to the recipe, you could sprinkle some hot peppers on top!
What to Serve with Chili
- My hubby loves having Pimento Cheese Sandwiches with Chili and now I enjoy that combo too.
- Most of the time we just stick with having some good old-fashioned homemade Cornbread with our chili.
- Saltines
- Oyster Crackers, like these

How To Freeze Chili
Allow cooked Chili to completely cool. Spoon into freezer safe container, like this. Use a freezer label like this, to mark what is in the container then freeze until ready to use.
To reheat, allow the chili to thaw overnight in the refrigerator. Pour into a microwave safe bowl, heat and serve.
