Three Simple Decorating Tips Anyone Can Do
This conversation is sponsored by Commercial Silk. While I have received products for review, opinions are 100% my own.
Home decorating does not come easy for me so these Three Simple Decorating Tips Anyone Can Do have been put to use quite a bit in my home.
Now that the holiday season is over and all the decorations are packed away, I’m focusing on cleaning and organizing along with some decor touch ups around the house.
We all have certain talents and I’m no exception but decorating isn’t one of mine. I prefer to stick with simple tricks and tips like Pillows, Paint and Plants as well as a healthy relationship with Pinterest.
Pillows
Decorating with pillows is one of the simplest and most affordable tips available. I usually change pillows on our sofas for each season. We have an easy tutorial here for making envelope pillow covers. I enjoy making them especially since it’s such a huge savings on the budget to make my own.
Anytime there is a decor change one of our cats feels compelled to inspect it for a new sleep spot.
These buffalo check pillow covers were made using inexpensive fleece blankets for the Christmas season.
These fall envelope pillow covers were created from upcycled plaid shirts. I enjoyed this project quite a bit and have plans to make more.
Upcycling old shirts from a loved one is a nice way to create a memory. I wish I had known this tip when my Dad passed away.
Paint
It isn’t really necessary for me to sing the praises of paint! The old saying goes “It’s amazing what a coat of paint can do”
Paint isn’t just for walls when it comes to decorating. Don’t be afraid to change the look of a piece of furniture too! In our post New Paint Saves An Old Porch Table we share the before and after look along with all the details of this old folk art porch table.
We did some major remodeling in our home several years ago by repainting throughout as well as replacing all the floors. We didn’t paint the interior doors during this project and that is about to happen this spring for a clean updated look.
Plants
We enter our home through our laundry room and into the den. Our first view is the side of this entertainment center with that empty little corner. I’ve placed a few things there through the years like this but never really been satisfied and usually just leave it empty and ponder what to do with that space.
When I was contacted by Commercial Silk to represent their brand, I knew exactly what would be perfect for this spot! I’m in love with my new 5′ Boxwood Spiral Topiary! It’s perfect for this spot in our den.
We unpacked the topiary and placed it in our den corner. While I love the size, the corner still doesn’t seem quite finished, does it?
Valentine season provided the perfect occasion to add a splash of color. I hung my Valentine Rag Wreath above the topiary and draped the planter with a matching fabric. I can easily change the wreath and the fabric with each season.
Now our entry space is so welcoming. I love how tall our Boxwood Spiral Topiary is! It really creates a finished look to that corner.
Head on over to Commercial Silk and find the perfect beautiful faux plants to update the decor in your home.
What neat ideas!

These are very creative! love the T-shirt pillows, something I will definitely have to try doing, thanks for sharing!
The topiary looks perfect in that spot. I love that the height fills up the space next to your cabinet.
Excellent ideas! I love pillows – I was just thinking the other day that we needed some more for our couch!
Plants really do add a special touch to a room. I love the faux kind because I don’t have to remember to water them. And those pillows made from shirts are amazing. I saw quite a few during the holidays. People were making them from old shirts to create memories of their loved ones. Such a great idea!
Great tips, Shirley! I love the transformation your patriotic table made with a little paint job, and plants always add a nice touch.

Yes! I was just asking myself recently what our style is for our home. It’s all a mish mosh and I’m really itching to create some sense of style. Plants were the first thing that came to mind! I also don’t have any pillows (whaaa??) and I should! Pinning & sharing. Thanks!
