It took a few tries but I finally perfected my Skillet Cabbage, Rice & Sausage One Dish Dinner Recipe! Only 6 ingredients and less than one hour to the dinner table!
Truthfully, I never would have thought that my hubby and I would even enjoy this particular combination of ingredients. If you’ve been here often, you know my hubby likes to cook. He recently tried a recipe from a magazine with cabbage, rice and tomatoes. It was ok but not spectacular and that’s ok. From his attempt, we learned that we liked that combination of ingredients. So I started thinking.
The recipe in the magazine had a whole lot of ingredients. We are busy people and don’t often have time to devote to tons of ingredients and lots of steps in recipes. So I took it upon myself to create an easier version, full of flavor with less work.
- 1 pkg. smoked sausage
- 1 can diced tomatoes with chilies
- 1 cup brown rice
- ½ medium head cabbage
- 2 tsp. Old Bay seasoning
- 1 can (15 oz) chicken broth
- Chop .the cabbage into bite size pieces
- Chop the sausage into small pieces
- In a large skillet, bring the tomatoes and chicken broth to a boil
- Stir in Old Bay seasoning
- Add the cabbage to the skillet and simmer until tender, about 30 minutes
- Stir in the rice
- Add sausage
- Simmer with lid on until the rice is done.
- You do want some juices in this dish once it is done, so if you need to add more liquid, use boiling water.
Photo above shows the cabbage cooking in the broth and tomatoes. Some of the juice will cook out while simmering the cabbage.
You do want some juices in this dish once it is done so if you need to add more liquid, you can use boiling water. The point at which you may need to add more liquid is when you add the rice.

Can I use beef broth instead of chicken broth ?
Shirley Wood says
Hi Christy, I have never used beef broth instead so I can only say the flavor would be very different I expect. Let me know how it goes! Beef broth has a very different flavor than chicken broth.

This was my first go around with this recipe. I knew better than to cook the cabbage before the brown rice. I will use white basmati rice next time because that is my go to. I started cooking this at about 6:45pm and it is now 9:00pm.
Thank you for the recipe Miss Lady
P.S. Flavor is delicious 😉

We always use Brown Rice and cook the cabbage first. The last time I made it just a few days ago, we left the rice out completely in an effort to curb carbs. Glad you like the flavor combo. It is really delicious.

This looks great, Shirley! I make sausage and cabbage, but I’ve never added rice to it!

Easier is always better. Nothing gets me like long drawn out recipes with a million ingredients! My mom used to make cabbage with rice when we were growing up and used to love it. So glad you finally found the correct ingredients to make it your own. Nothing beats the flavor of diced tomatoes with chilies.

I love how you took a long drawn out recipe and totally redid it to fit your needs. I happen to be in love with one dish dinners – less cleanup and always tasty. And I have to say that cabbage is one of my favorite sides. Your skillet dinner will be a huge hit at my house. Thanks for sharing and have an awesome weekend, Shirley!

This reminds me of a dish my Mom used to make (passed on from my Polish grandmother). I love that you made this a skillet dish for easy week nights!
