Tools Used
- 13 x 9 baking dish or large sheet pan with sides
- Parchment paper
- Large saucepan
- Large bowl
- Spatula
- Knife for cutting the Rice Krispies Treats

Ingredients
- 6 cups crispy rice cereal
- 1 (10 ounce) package miniature marshmallows
- 3 tablespoons butter, salted
- 2 cups miniature M&Ms, divided
- Non-stick cooking spray
Rice Krispies Cereal: Use any brand of crispy rice cereal you like. The biggest tip I can give you is to use a very large bowl or pot, like a Dutch oven to make these. 6 cups of cereal takes up a lot of space.
Marshmallows: A 10 ounce bag of mini marshmallows should be about 6 cups. The mini marshmallows melt quicker than the big ones. Can you use big marshmallows? Yes, about 40 of the big ones which should be a 10 ounce package will work in this recipe.
Butter: Use salted butter, not margarine for a richer flavor. Margarine will work if that is what you have.
M&M Candies: I use mini M&M’s in this recipe. You can mix half regular and half mini if you like.
Variations: Use the colors of M&M’s relevant to the nearest holiday for a fun variation. You can use the Valentine colors, red and green Christmas colors, or Red, White and Blue. Visit the M&M’s store on Amazon for any color for any occasion.
Directions
I have included directions for both the stove top and microwave methods to making these cereal treats. The difference is only in melting the butter and marshmallows. I prefer the stovetop method.
Step 1
Prepare a 13 x 9 baking dish or sheet pan with sides with parchment. Be sure to leave some edges of parchment paper outside of the pan so you can easily lift the treats from the pan for cutting. Then spray the paper with non-stick spray.
Stove Top Method
Melt the butter in a large saucepan over low heat. When the butter is melted, add the marshmallows and melt, stirring constantly.
Next
Remove the saucepan from heat and fold the cereal in quickly. Then fold in 1 cup of the candies into the cereal with the spatula.
Then
Spray your spatula with non-stick cooking spray and press mixture into the prepared baking dish or sheet pan. Evenly cover the top of the treats with the remaining mini M&M’s and press down gently using your spatula. Cool completely before cutting into squares to serve.

Cut and Serve
Once your marshmallow treats are completely cooled, cut into about 12 squares to serve.

Microwave Method
Place the marshmallows and butter into a microwave-safe bowl. Heat for 1 minute on high in the microwave. Stir the mixture vigorously allowing the residual heat to continue melting the marshmallows. Return to the microwave for an additional 30 seconds if needed.

Next
Fold the cereal into the melted marshmallows quickly, using a spatula that has been sprayed with non-stick cooking spray. Then add 1 cup of the candies and blend them into the cereal.
Then
Spray your spatula, again with non-stick cooking spray and press mixture into the prepared baking dish or sheet pan. Evenly cover the top of the treats with the remaining mini M&M’s and press down gently using your spatula. Cool completely before cutting into squares to serve.
Cut and serve
Once your marshmallow treats are completely cooled, cut into about 12 squares to serve.

Does the size of your pan matter?
Yes and no. If you want thin Rice Krispies treats, use a 13×9 pan or a big sheet pan. You can then use a cookie cutter to make shapes if you are making treats for a special occasion. Use red and green M&M’s and a big Christmas tree cookie cutter.
If you want nice thick treats, use a smaller baking dish or even a square pan. Cut them smaller because they will be quite thick.
Why are my treats hard instead of soft and chewy?
Melt your marshmallows on low heat. Do not melt the marshmallow too fast. Slow and low is the way to go.
How do I cut Rice Krispies treat without the knife getting stuck?
Spray your knife with non-stick cooking spray occasionally while cutting your treats. If you are using a cookie cutter, same thing. Spray the cookie cutter.
How to store Rice Krispies Treats
Store in an air tight container on the kitchen counter for up to three days. I doubt they will last that long because everyone will keep eating them until they are gone.
