What is goat cheese?

Goat cheese or chevre is cheese made from the milk of goats. The very popular Feta is also made from goat’s milk.

What does goat cheese taste like?

The flavor can range from mild to tart. The texture can range from soft to hard depending on how long the cheese was aged.

It is believed by many that goat cheese has a similar taste to mozzarella and can be substituted for mozzarella in recipes. The taste is described as mild, earthy, and buttery with a bit of tart flavor.

Ingredients for making a Cranberry Goat Cheese Log appetizer recipe

Ingredients

You can find all of the simple ingredients for this easy recipe at the grocery store. In fact, you may have dried cranberries in your pantry if you tend to add them to salads as we do.

You will notice my recipe calls for either one 8 oz. or two 4 oz. goat cheese logs. An 8 oz. should be enough for a great appetizer for about 6 people. But you may only be able to find the 4 oz. at the grocery store. Just buy two of those to be able to serve about 6 people.

  • 1/3 cup pecans, finely chopped
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp fresh rosemary leaves, finely chopped
  • 1/3 cup dried cranberries, chopped
  • 1- 8 oz. or 2- 4 oz. goat cheese log(s)
  • About 3 Tbsp of Honey, preferably local honey

For Serving

  • Crackers
  • Crusty french bread or crostini
  • Pita chips

Directions

This delicious recipe requires only about a 15-minute prep time. It is a perfect party appetizer for the busy holiday season. Serve at room temperature for any holiday gathering.

Pecans, cranberries and rosemary leaves mixed in a bowl

Step 1

Combine chopped pecans, rosemary leaves, and cranberries in a medium bowl and toss to combine. Set aside.

Pour the honey onto the goat cheese log
Coating the outside of a goat cheese roll with honey

Step 2

Place the log of goat cheese onto a small rimmed bowl and drizzle with honey. Turn the cheese log to spread the honey evenly across the entire surface. The honey will allow the nut mixture to stick and provide a little bit of sweetness to this impressive appetizer.

Savory option to honey

If you prefer a savory option to the honey, use olive oil to coat the outside of the cheese log.

Step 3

Sprinkle the chopped pecan mixture across the top of the honey-covered cheese log and gently press it into the surface. Continue doing this until you have covered the entire cheese log all the way around.

To Serve

If you are serving your cranberry pecan goat cheese log on a serving dish, drizzle a small amount of the honey onto the dish, and place the cranberry goat cheese roll on top of it. Then sprinkle any remaining pecan mixture around it for display.

If you are adding your cranberry goat cheese appetizer to a charcuterie board, you can place the serving dish onto the board or serve the cheese log directly on the board without the honey drizzle on the bottom. Feel free to place fresh cranberries around the cheese log for presentation.

Cranberry goat cheese spread

Add this easy appetizer recipe to your collection of party appetizers. The log shape is a fun addition to any charcuterie board or festive cheese plates. The soft cheese can even be spread with a butter knife if you don’t have a cheese knife on hand.

Optional Ingredients

You can use a variety of ingredients as the outer coating depending on your personal flavor preferences.

Follow the same directions and toss the coatings in a separate bowl and then roll the cheese log in them after coating it with honey or olive oil. Personally, I enjoy the combination of fresh basil with sun-dried tomatoes and crunchy pistachios.

  • chopped pistachios
  • fresh herbs such as fresh basil
  • lemon zest
  • orange zest
  • fresh fruit
  • poppy seed
  • chopped chives
  • sun-dried tomatoes
  • cracked peppercorns
  • toasted pine nuts
