Colored duct tape makes a fun craft supply. Duct tape crafts can be a lot of fun like this Duck Tape Bag.

Let’s get right to the step-by-step process.

How To Make A Duct Tape Bag

This cute little Valentine Duck Tape Lunch Bag is going to my precious 6-year-old granddaughter. She is very special as all grandchildren are. She is extra special because she has six older brothers! I added the sparkly hearts with her in mind.

Supplies

  • 1 brown paper lunch bag, like these
  • 1 roll of Duck tape in the desired pattern (the Valentine tape came from the $1 store)
  • 2 contrasting colors of Duck tape ( I used about 1/3 roll of white and very little pink)
  • 1 pkg. sparkly foam hearts ($1 store find)
  • Red embroidery thread
  • Peel and stick Velcro, like this
  • 2 buttons

I loved the Valentine’s heart tape but felt like it needed some contrast to keep it from being too much. I selected both white and hot pink for contrasting colors.

I really used the scissors much more than the box cutter to open the bag carefully in all seams.

Step 1 Make the bag handle

Creating the handle was a bit of a challenge for me. My first try was an epic fail when I tried to place the white and heart tape together. I made a wrinkled mess and realized it was too wide.

Instead, I went with the hot pink and folded it over itself in thirds to create a narrow more functional handle. To hide the loose ends, I folded them over and secured them with a tiny piece of tape.

These ends will be sewn onto the bag with the red embroidery thread. Notice the seam in the bottom photo (above) which explains folding in thirds. Be careful and go slow to avoid wrinkles.

Next

Tape the outside of the bag.

This is the fun part. I used white tape to cover all of the overlapped edges and reinforce them as well for a stronger bag.

You will notice the reinforced white tape on the top inside edge in a later photo of the buttons being sewn on.

Now to create the closures

I used peel-and-stick Velcro and some super cute heart buttons I found at the fabric store to create a cute closure.

The need for 2 different closers is because the Velcro only holds the lower edge of the bag. You could skip the Velcro and only use the buttons but the top of the bag is somewhat heavy when folded over.

How to Attach the Buttons

I actually sewed the buttons using embroidery thread which I divided into 3 strands. Embroidery thread is a heavier weight and shows a more pronounced look when complete. All 6 strands were too thick though so I divided them into 3 strands prior to sewing.

I used a regular sewing needle instead of an embroidery needle. The needle picks up glue from the tape during the sewing process but it isn’t so much to hinder progress.

The handles attached

I also sewed AND hot glued the handles on. I put a dab of hot glue right behind the sewing for added security.

Only using glue would work but your handles might come off if you put heavy items in the bag. The visible red thread is a fun part of the Valentine’s bag.

Decorate the Duct Tape Lunch bag

We still needed some bling! I found these cute little sparkly hearts at the $1 store. They were perfect to hot glue onto the front of the Valentine’s bag.

All done and such a fun project. I know my little Lolli will love her Valentine Duck Tape lunch bag. She will probably be transporting Barbie dolls and other toys in it too!
