A friend recently told me a story of how she worked methodically and carefully to make a family recipe to please someone special in her life. It was an heirloom family Bundt Cake recipe. She followed the recipe explicitly. But when it came time to invert the cake out of the Bundt pan, it refused to budge. Unfortunately, she wound up spooning it out bit by bit. Oh, the cake was good. it just wasn’t a pretty sight.

How To Grease and Flour A Bundt Pan

I use Crisco which is a lard or solid shortening. You can buy a small 16 oz. container, like this on Amazon. You can also find Crisco in your grocery store on the baked goods aisle. It also comes in solid sticks, also found on the baked goods aisle.

Why use Crisco?

Have you ever heard the old saying “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”? Solid shortening has always been the right way to grease a cake pan. I’ve never used butter because Crisco works. Any brand of solid shortening will do. Do Not however, use flavored shortening and that includes butter flavor.

Ingredients

  • Solid shortening, I use Crisco
  • About 1/3 cup of Flour

Instructions

One

Use a paper towel to scoop out a good bit of lard from the can. Wipe the lard, generously inside of your Bundt pan. If using a fluted Bundt pan, take care to cover inside of all the indentions.

Two

Don’t miss the middle protrusion of the Bundt pan. It may be a little awkward to grease and flour but it must be done.

Three

Once you have the lard spread over the entire inside surface of your Bundt pan, sprinkle about 1/3 cup of flour into the pan. Now tilt the pan and tap the side while turning the pan to allow the flour to stick to the lard all the way around the inside of the pan.

After you cover the entire inside surface with flour, you can give the pan a couple of good taps to loosen any excess flour and dispose of it. Now your Bundt pan is ready for baking.
