Ingredient List

My easy homemade salsa recipe uses simple ingredients you can find in the produce department at your grocery store. Shop your local farmer’s market in the summer for fresh tomatoes.

Fresh Tomatoes. My easy salsa dip recipe calls for fresh tomatoes. As you know, there are many different kinds of tomatoes. I recommend Roma tomatoes for the best salsa. The Roma tomato has fewer seeds, is plum-shaped, and is more firm. You can grow Roma tomatoes at home. They are perfect fresh summer tomatoes for recipes like this type of salsa. Check your local farmers market for fresh tomatoes.

Jalapeno peppers are considered to be mild peppers by those who are firm believers in hot and spicy foods. If you’d like to kick up the heat, substitute your favorite hot peppers for the jalapeno. Be sure to warn your guests of the heat level in your salsa. Also, if you prefer an even more mild heat level, substitute the jalapeno for sweet chili pepper. Be sure to remove the seeds no matter which pepper you ultimately use. The seeds are the source of a lot of heat.

Yellow onions are more commonly used in recipes because they have just a hint of sweetness and are not as sharp as white onions. They also do not leave you with the magnitude of onion breath that white onions do. White onions are commonly used in Mexican recipes therefore you can substitute white for yellow if you prefer that bold flavor of the onion to be prevalent.

Cilantro is an herb you can easily grow in containers in a sunny window or on your porch or deck. Cilantro is the leafy green used most often to season Mexican, Asian and Indian recipes. The taste is pungent, lemony, and strong. A little bit goes a long way when flavoring dishes with cilantro. Everyone is not a fan of cilantro.

Garlic is used to flavor many different types of dishes, soups, and sauces. Most commonly pressed through a garlic press, like this one, to create a soft tidbit to add to recipes. In this delicious salsa recipe, we will add the garlic to the blender and pulverize it to add flavor without the large chunks.

Fresh Salsa ingredients
  • 2 lbs. fresh tomatoes, divided
  • ½ large jalapeño, seeded, divided
  • ½ large yellow onion, divided
  • ½ cup fresh cilantro, divided
  • 2-3 large cloves of garlic, peeled
  • ½ tsp coarse sea salt
  • 2-3 Tbsp fresh lime juice

Instructions

Step 1

Divide the tomatoes, jalapeño, onion, and cilantro equally into two groups. You are going to pulverize one group and chop the other for a chunkier salsa. The combination of the smooth and chunky consistency will give you restaurant style salsa.

If you prefer a smooth consistency, simply pulverize all of the tomatoes, onion, jalapeno, and cilantro.

Step 2

Roughly chop one group of fresh ingredients and add to the bowl of a food processor, like this one, along with the peeled garlic. Pulse on high until all of the contents are chunky.

Now, open the lid of the food processor and sprinkle with sea salt and replace the lid. Pulse until the tomatoes, jalapeño, onion, cilantro, and garlic are thoroughly combined, but not completely liquified. Transfer to a large bowl and set aside.

Step 3

Finely dice the remaining tomatoes, jalapeño, onion, and cilantro, and add to the bowl with the pulverized vegetable mixture. Add the fresh lime juice and stir to combine.

Do a taste test and add additional salt or fresh lime juice, if desired.

Step 4

Serve immediately with your favorite chips. This simple salsa can be stored in the refrigerator overnight in an airtight container.

Serve this fresh tomato salsa recipe on taco night. It also pairs well with taco salad. Your family will think you picked it up from their favorite Mexican restaurant.
