Our Family Halloween Night Tradition

My family has been spending Halloween evening together for many years. Hubby and I usually go over to our daughter’s home for dinner. She always makes this Taco Soup recipe. After dinner we go Trick or Treating with the grandchildren. It has been such fun for many years.

Time marches on and the grandchildren are not little anymore. They are all old enough to go out Trick or Treating together and with their friends now so our game plan is a little different. We stay at the house and give out candy which is super fun.

Last year we still went to our daughter’s home for the traditional Taco soup dinner. We love that but we sat a big table up in the driveway and and gave out candy. There were three families giving out candy so we got to Ooooo and Ahhhh at the costumes and the little kids. It was such fun!

This year, we will stay home and do the same thing in our own driveway. In our neighborhood, people come through in decorated golf carts and it’s just fun to chat with folks as they enjoy their evening.

While sugar cookies are always good by themselves, decorated sugar cookies tend to add a little more pizzazz to events! Black icing with white edible eyes just screams Halloween! Doesn’t it!

Decorated Bat Sugar Cookies for Halloween

Make these cute Halloween Bat Sugar Cookies for your Halloween Party Food. They are not so spooky and plenty of fun to eat.

Cook Time 10 minutes
Prep Time 20 minutes
Total Time 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 4 Cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 Sticks plus 2 Tbsp. Unsalted Butter
  • 1 1/2 Cups Sugar
  • 1 tsp. Vanilla
  • 2 Large eggs
  • 2  1/2 Tbsp. milk

Instructions

Add the sifted flour, salt and baking powder into a medium size bowl and set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffly then add the vanilla, eggs and milk continuing to mix.

Gradually add the dry ingredients a little at a time into the creamed mixture until well blended.

Divide the dough in half. Shape into round disk or long logs and wrap with plastic wrap or wax paper and refrigerate. Allow to cool for about one hour before rolling out to bake. Can be refrigerated overnight.

Preheat the oven to 375°

Remove the first disk of dough from the refrigerator and roll out onto a floured surface or pastry mat like this one.

Use a rolling pin to roll the cookie dough to about 1/4" thickness. Cut the cookies out using the cookie cutter of your choice.

Bake 8 to 10 minutes. Transfer the cookies to a wire cooling rack. Do not ice until completely cool.

I used Wilton Icing in a tube like this one.

Notes

Let the kids decorate the cookies!
