Tools Used
- Large Crockpot, like this 7 quart one
- Food Processor, I like this one
- Measuring cup
- Measuring spoons
- Medium bowl
- Wooden spoon for stirring
Ingredients
- 6-7 lbs. of your favorite cooking apples (I used 3lbs. Honey Crisp and 4 lbs. Gala), Peel, core and slice the apples in fourths
- 1 Cup granulated sugar
- 2 Cups Light Brown Sugar
- 1 Tbsp. Vanilla extract
- 2 Cups Apple Cider Vinegar
- 2 tsp. Cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp. ground Allspice
- 1/4 tsp. salt
Directions
Step 1
Prepare you apples. Peel, core and slice the apples into fourths. In a medium bowl, combine the sugars and spices with the salt.
I use a combination of Fuji and Honeycrisp apples for this homemade apple butter recipe.
Step 2
Place sliced apples in the Crockpot along with the vanilla. Then sprinkle the sugar and spices mixture over top of the apples.
Step 3
Cook on low for about 8-10 hours or until nice and tender. Stir with wooden spoon every couple of hours and replace the lid. Your apples should be tender enough to mash easily.
Step 4
Once your apples are tender enough to mash, scoop them into the bowl of your food processor and pulse until lump free. If you have an immersion blender, you can do this step right in the Crockpot.
Step 5 Preserving
You can now put your Apple Butter into canning jars for the canning process. If you do not wish to preserve you Apple Butter by canning it, simply store in airtight containers and keep in refrigerator.
Directions for Canning Apple Butter
Tools
Step 1 Preparation
Lay a big clean towel on your counter next to the stove. This is for setting the hot jars onto when you remove them from the hot boiling water. Gather all of your supplies; jars, lids, rings, jar funnel and jar lifter.
Step 2 Boil the jars
Always use brand new lids. Never reuse a lid, it will not seal.
Prepare your canning jars, lids and rings by placing them in a Dutch oven filled about half way with boiling water. Boil them for a couple of minutes and then remove them to the hot towel.
Boiling the jars does two things; it sterilizes them and gets them nice and hot so the jars will seal quicker.
Step 3
Begin scooping the fresh hot Apple Butter into the jars using a big ladle and the jar funnel. Leave about an inch of headspace, don’t fill them to the rim. Run your bubble popper or chop stick around the inside of the jar to remove any air bubbles.
Wipe the rim of the jar clean with a clean wet kitchen cloth. Place on the lid and then screw on the ring but not too tight.
As you fill the jars and place the lid and ring onto each of them you can begin placing them into the canner or large pot filled half way with boiling water. You only need enough boiling water to cover the top of the jars. They do not need to be in too deep water.
Step 4
Boil half pint jars for about 10 minutes and pint jars for 15 minutes. Remove from the pot carefully using your jar lifter and place onto the towel.
Step 5
Leave your hot jars of apple butter sitting on the counter and do not disturb for 12 to 24 hours to allow all of the jars to seal. Leave your hot jars of homemade apple butter sitting on the towel on the counter and do not disturb for 12 to 24 hours to allow all of the jars to seal. You will love hearing that ‘pop’ sound as each one seals.
