Basil Grilled Tomatoes
Heating tomatoes draws out their sweet and savory flavor. Topping them with fresh basil and cheese makes them even better.
Basil Grilled Tomatoes are such a simple side dish I hate to even call it a recipe!
Tomatoes are a versatile summer treat fresh from the garden! Of course you can buy tomatoes in your produce department year round but those fresh from the back yard garden or the summer Farmer’s Market just taste better!
The combination of fresh crushed basil and a heated tomato topped with melted provolone creates an amazing taste.

Ingredients
Simple ingredients make this delicious summer side dish.
- Fresh large tomatoes
- Fresh crushed basil
- Sliced provolone cheese
Directions
This simple recipe is ready to eat in minutes.
Step 1
Slice your tomatoes thick because grilling them will break them down a tad and make them soft and scrumptious.
Step 2
Spray the griddle with non-stick cooking spray and heat to medium-high heat. Place your tomato slices onto the hot griddle and sprinkle generously with crushed basil.
Grilling tomatoes brings out the flavor in them. I find it much easier to use my Stove top Griddle for this purpose. Just be sure to spray it first with non-stick spray for easy clean up.
Step 3
Cook for about 60 seconds and turn the tomato over using a spatula. Then cook the other side for about 6o seconds. Then top with a slice of cheese and continue to cook until the cheese melts. Remove from the griddle onto a serving platter. Serve and enjoy!
TIP
The trick for making the sliced cheese fit the tomato is to cut it with a the rim of a small glass. Find a glass about the size of your tomato. Of course I still place the edges of the cheese on too, can’t waste good cheese!
Note
Basil Grilled Tomatoes are good with or without cheese. We have come to love our basil grilled tomatoes even better with melted Provolone. I have used sliced or shredded cheese and either way is fine.
Variation
Use the cheese you like best. Mozzarella is also quite good melted on grilled tomatoes.
There is something delicious about the combination of Basil and Tomato!
Basil Grilled Tomatoes pair well as a side dish with most summer meals. They are great with our Glazed Green Beans!

Basil Grilled Tomatoes Recipe
Ingredients
- Tomatoes
- Dried Basil
Instructions
- Slice your tomatoes thick.
- Spray the griddle with non-stick spray.
- Place your tomato slices onto the griddle.
- Sprinkle each slice with your desired amount of dried Basil.
- Cook about 3 or 4 minutes until nice and hot.
- If desired, top with y our favorite type of cheese and allow it to melt.
- Serve and Enjoy!
Growing your own Basil, then drying it and crushing it may be a process but when you top these tomatoes with your own crushed Basil, you’ll taste why you went to all that work! You can also use store bought crushed basil, like this, if that is what you have on hand.

Our plants are full of Jersey tomatoes but they haven’t ripened just yet and this post has me anxiously waiting for them to turn red! We also have an abundant crop of basil this year. I usually use a fresh basil leaf on my tomato sandwiches, but after seeing your recipe I will try grilling the tomatoes with dried basil and then adding some fresh as well. Thanks for sharing your version of this summer treat.
I saw your tomato sandwich and I’ve honestly never had just a plain tomato sandwich. I have a ton of tomatoes growing, so this will come in handy for a quick tomato treat.
Erlene, I’m in shock right now. Maybe a plain tomato sandwich or ‘mater sammich’ as it is lovingly called in these parts, is a southern thing. I honestly never considered there were folks out there who never had that treat. It’s such a simple yet delicious summer favorite. Please give it a try! We like heavy mayo on both pieces of bread, a little salt and heavy pepper.

Lol, Melinda you are so right. I have been know to just eat a fresh tomato like an apple when they are fresh off the vine. That’s what makes those little cherry tomatoes so good!!
You’ve got me pining for a good ole Georgia tomato. Don’t tell anyone, but I’ve never found a tomato as good as the ones from my dad’s garden. A few days ago he told me he sure wished I was there to take the 5-gallon bucket full he had just picked. Basil and tomato go together like peanut butter and jelly and your grilled tomatoes look scrumptious.
If I had that 5 gallon bucket full of fresh tomatoes, I’d be in my kitchen canning them and looking forward to using them this winter! Nothing like fresh tomatoes from the home garden!!
