Here is how I made the ugly old vintage wood paper plate holder into a pretty scarf holder for my closet.

I think these wood paper plate holders may be from sometime back in the early 80’s. We had a neighbor who made lots of pretty wooden decor items and sold them at craft fairs about that time. Isn’t it funny that it says ‘country china.’ My grandson and I had to chuckle at the humor.

See those little spindles. They are perfect for hanging scarves! What else could you use it for? It could go inside of a cabinet as a lid holder. Maybe in the garage to wrap extension cords around. What would you use it for?

My Supplies
  • One ugly in need of help vintage wood paper plate holder
  • Mod Podge
  • Pretty napkin (mine are hydrangea)
  • Valspar Color Sample (Mellow Spring Signature)
  • Apple Barrel Lilac Mist acrylic paint
  • DecoArt African Violet acrylic paint
  • DecoArt Cherry Blossom Pink acrylic paint
  • DecoArt Wild Green acrylic paint
  • DecoArt Natural Beige acrylic paint
  • Krylon Leather Brown spray paint
  • Waverly Damask Floral Stencil
  • Fine sand paper

First I gave the piece a good bath. Most items from the thrift store are in need of cleaning. Because mine was wood, I allowed it to dry for several days after I scrubbed it.

Next I sanded it lightly so the paint would adhere better. Then I spray painted it with the Leather Brown paint to hide the ugly.

Pretty napkins and Mod Podge are two of my favorite mediums to work with. I found these pretty Hydrangea napkins a while back and have only used them once. See Repurpose Mayonnaise Jars Into Pretty Craft Storage Containers.

The Mod Podge process is quick and easy. Just brush on the Mod Podge and apply the section of the napkin you wish to be visible. Use your brush to smooth the napkin as you go. It typically dries in about 20 minutes. You do need to work quickly once you apply the glue to the surface. This project required only two napkins. Be sure to pull apart the layers of the napkins. Most are in two layers.

While the napkins were drying I got busy with the painting process beginning with that pretty mint green. It’s actually a paint sample left over from when we remodeled the inside of our old home. It creates a nice contrast with the hydrangea.

I have been looking for a reason to use that fun Waverly Damask Floral Stencil. Yes I did buy it without a project in mind. I fell in love with the pattern so isn’t it funny that I only used a small portion on this project.

Mixing paints was so fun! I was really trying to get somewhere close to the colors from the hydrangea napkins with my paint mixtures. There was no measuring, just guessing. I use milk jug lids for paint when I only need a small amount. Those lids are the perfect size for small projects. Into one lid I mixed African Violent and Cherry Blossom Pink and Wild Green with Natural Beige in another lid. The Lilac is pictured above.

The last step was to use a fine grit sand paper to give the piece a worn look. This was the main reason I chose the Leather Brown spray paint for the base. I wanted that dark to show through for a little shabby chic touch.

How about that for a scarf holder! It’s eclectic closet decor and a good organizer at the same time! Pretty closet decor is sort of like pretty panties, not a whole lot of people are going to see them but we are and we like to feel pretty so we treat ourselves to pretty things!

Many of my scarves were tucked into the shoe holder on the back of the closet door which is why those slots are now empty. Now I can store all of my sandals together again! I’m all set and ready for scarf season! Pashima scarves are my personal favorite because they are huge and can also be used as a wrap.

This was such a fun thrift store upcycle project and filled a need I had in my closet.

  2. I’m from back in the day, Shirley and don’t remember paper plate holders! Lol! Probably because we couldn’t afford paper plates. In fact, I thought using paper plates is a current trend for folks like me who don’t like to wash dishes! Anyway, love how you transformed the vintage paper plate holder using napkins and stencils! What an adorable new look and usage!

    1. Gail, we didn’t buy paper plates either. Those were considered a luxury. My how things have changed! My paper plates were really to large to fit well so I think those things were made for the white paper thin one’s maybe.
