For many years I did exactly the same thing with our tree year in and year out. The only real difference would be new ornaments we either made or bought on vacation. Long before anyone ever heard of the internet or a thing called blogging, we used to subscribe to magazines where we found new ideas for our homes. We used to look forward to receiving the holiday issues of magazines like Family Circle and Woman’s Day so we could try a new seasonal recipe or make a fun ornament. I amassed a nice collection of homemade ornaments full of priceless memories.
Then in July of 1994 our home was flooded. The majority of our Christmas decor was ruined in a storage building behind our home. While that may seem devastating, because it is, there was a valuable lesson learned. In the great scheme of life, it’s all just stuff. Making changes was necessary and I learned to continue to make my Christmas tree decor different from one year to the next. Oh sure, we have collected quite a few priceless memories in our ornaments again but I have enjoyed allowing myself the freedom to play around with how we decorate our Christmas tree.
We no longer top the tree with a lighted topper. Some years I make a giant ribbon bow. This year we are using this gorgeous gold Angel Tree Topper we found at a yard sale this summer. We tend to shop for Christmas ornaments on vacation. My hubby and I have looked at untold numbers of angel tree toppers through the years and never found one we liked until we saw this one at a yard sale nearby.
Ornaments which are never left off the tree are those my girls colored in Sunday School when they were little.
I was in my early 40’s when I started college. Someone gifted me with this ornament that first year of college.
As a part of the annual Blogger Ornament Exchange group I have received some beautiful handmade ornaments like these two from last year and this year both of which are on our tree now.
There simply must be ornaments on the tree which reflect your families personality such as this mini snow ball we picked up at Krispy Kreme.
My hubby picked out a 10 foot Frazier Fir from the Christmas Tree Farm this year. He wanted a big tree for our first Christmas in the new home. It is so big, I had to take a picture from the bottom looking up.
The majority of the tree is decorated with traditional red and gold shiny balls which remind me of Grandma’s tree. I added plaid ribbon and used a buffalo plaid blanket for the skirt. See our new DIY Red Plaid Embroidery Hoop Ornament here.
Now that all the ornaments, lights and ribbon are on the tree it is time to wrap some gifts in that plaid paper I bought on Black Friday to go under the tree.
Now let’s check out the rest of the beautiful Christmas Trees!
Holy smokes that’s a HUGE tree! I love how you twisted the ribbon around the tree and those ornaments colored by your daughters are precious!
What a gorgeous tree, Shirley! I love the plaid ribbon and the lovely variety of ornaments on it–family memories and more. Pinned to my Christmas board.
I love how full your tree is. It’s is simply beautiful. The plaid ribbon is the perfect touch. Thanks for sharing on Sunday’s Best.
Your tree certainly holds lots of family memories. I featured my Retro Themed Tree but our other tree is always decorated with hand made ornaments and ornaments we collected on family vacations. Thank you for sharing your special tree.
I was instantly impressed with the size and fullness of your tree! I also love how you twisted the plaid ribbon, and placed an angel on top in lieu of a star or bow. My daughter always loved that we had an angel on our more formal tree when she was growing up. I also enjoyed reading about some of your personal connections to the ornaments.
Your tree is so beautiful and full, its beautiful all on ts own. I am really impressed how you curled and placed the ribbon. Its so well done and a bit different from the typical ribbon placement you see. Very pretty to look at.
Your tree is beautiful!! I love all the sentimental ornaments!
That tree is huge Shirley! I am so sorry you lost some of your ornaments. That stinks. But like you said now you get to buy more! Yay! Win! I love how you made the ribbon sort of swirl around the tree. Very snazzy, the ribbon and skirt are jsut lovely!
