It was the summer of 2015 when we realized our central unit wasn’t really producing cold air properly. Here in the deep south, summer heat can be brutal with our ferocious humidity. The freon did not all leak back out until we got into the coldest part of the winter which by then was early 2016.ย

The lifespan of a central air conditioning unit is generally between 12-15 years. We used ours for 16 which was probably at least 2 years longer than we should have. ย According to Energy.gov “Even if your air conditioner is only 10 years old, you may save 20% to 40% off your cooling energy costs by replacing it with a newer, more efficient model.”

Our new central unit was installed in mid March of 2016 so it has been almost a year now. The reduction in our monthly bill was evident from the very first bill.ย Spring and Fall we are paying close to $100 per month LESS. Winter and Summer it’s more like $50-$60 less. The new central unit is almost paying for itself. Yes, we do wish we had done it a year earlier. Lesson learned.
