How To Make A Faux Hobnail Vase
My new Faux Hobnail Vase set was inspired by Pinterest. Hobnail glass is one of those much loved pieces of antique decor many of us admire from a distance due to the expense.
Welcome to the May Pinterest Challenge Blog Hop, hosted by My Pinterventures. The purpose of this Pinterest Challenge is to motivate all the participants of this hop (and you too) to not just pin, but to make it happen! This month, I chose to make a Faux Hobnail Vase!

Supplies for making Faux Hobnail Glass are really simple
- Puffy Fabric Paint
- White High Gloss Spray Paint
- White Acrylic Paint
- Clear Glass Vase
While searching for a good tutorial I found several different methods and tried two. My inspiration Pin used puffy paint which worked best for me. The other method I tried was a big fat fail and that was to create the knobs using hot glue. The puff paint is the way to go. It’s really easy to apply.
I wanted to make my vases look like milk glass which is why I also painted the inside of each. In the above photo the insides have been painted and the puff dots added but the outside is not yet painted.
To paint the inside, you simply pour an ample amount of the acrylic paint inside, tilt the vase at an angle and turn slowly to spread the paint. This process takes a few minutes and you may need to pour more paint a few times to get good coverage. Allow ample drying time.
My goal was to have nice height on each of the hobnails. I laid my vases over on their side to allow the puff paint to dry so it wouldn’t run. It will run if you make the peak too high.
I do recommend that you follow a particular pattern and make your pattern decision prior to beginning your design. Actual Hobnail glass has distinct uniform patterns. Because we are making faux hobnail glass you can have some fun with your pattern and the size of your peaks.
The last step is to spray paint the outside with a high gloss white for a nice milk glass look.
Making A Faux Hobnail Vase is super easy. Paint the inside of the vase. Dot on puff paint for the hobnails and spray paint the outside of the vase. It doesn’t get much easier than that to make your own home decor!
I made a set of two which I plan to pair with some blue and white DIY decor I am working on like the Orbs in the cake stand.

This is brilliant, they look so expensive. Pinning.
Your vases turned out awesome. I’ve seen this before on Pinterest and it’s good to know that the puffy paint works better. I wonder if glass paint would work too?
I tell you, the gals in this link-up never cease to amaze me. What a darling project. Your finished pieces really, really look like hobnail vases. So clever.
How pretty! I remember making something like this in vacation bible school when I was little. We glued dried split peas and of course it wasn’t real glass!
These look fabulous. I bet you had a good time working on these. It is definitely a must try project.
I love Fenton hobnail milk glass but I have to admit that I was fascinated by this project. I’m afraid I won’t line the dots up pefectly. Wouldn’t these vases be great for a wedding or a bouquet for a sick friend!
Shirely, they came out great! I painted tiny vases from the inside this year with a Little left over chalk paint and they turend out great. I love your Addition with the glue. So much more texture!!!
These turned out great, Shirley! I’ve done some vases that I painted from the inside, but I’ve never thought about trying to create a hob nail look. Very nice! Pinning.
These turned out great, what a nice idea!
Great idea and project! Pinning to make!
This is beautiful Shirley! I love it. What a fun project & just a cool idea. Pinning to make one!
They look just like the real thing! We found a few hobnail vases at my husband’s grandparents house when we were cleaning out. They were so pretty. Pinned.
Those look really good! I think I might have some puff paint laying around somewhere & I definitely have some old jars to try this out on. Pinning for later!
