How To Make An Americana Clay Pot Wreath

You can make this beautiful Red and Blue Americana Clay Pot Wreath using simple supplies found at the Dollar store. No special skills are required.

Our new Americana clay pot wreath was an easy DIY using mostly Dollar Tree supplies.

We are in the process of giving our front porch a complete makeover. Americana decor is our theme. I had been wanting to make a flower pot wreath for some time so now is that time. The house is about to go on the market and there is much to do.

Update: We sold the house to the very first person to view it! The porch makeover helped! We can’t help but believe that first impression coming up the porch and being greeted with a nice welcoming wreath helped.

Americana Clay Pot Wreath supplies

You can find most of these wreath supplies at Dollar Tree. I picked up some of my succulents at Hobby Lobby because I wanted those long swag ones to hang.

• 3 larger clay pots  (Dollar Tree)
• 15 Succulents (Dollar Tree)
• 2 Swag types of succulents
• DecoArt Acrylic paint Navy Blue
• DecoArt Acrylic paint Deep Red
• 2 Dry floral foam (Dollar Tree)
• Spanish moss (Dollar Tree)
• Grapevine wreath form 16″
• Floral wire (Dollar Tree)
• Hot glue sticks and a hot glue gun
• Spray sealer

This is my first time making a flower pot wreath and it turned out quite beautiful. I love the Americana decor in the summer.

The floral wire is easier to hide in the design. I changed my mind completely about using the yellow paint. We are using a yellow wreath holder instead to add that pop of bright color.

Step by Step Clay Pot Wreath Tutorial

Step 1 Painting the Dollar Tree Flower Pots

First, I painted all the clay flower pots.

Terracotta pots are very porous meaning they will absorb liquids and then dry back out. Knowing this, I decided to paint using a piece of cotton fabric soaked in water. I cut up an old t-shirt to use and simply threw away all the paint-soaked pieces when I was done. 

Wring out the cloth then dab a little paint on the tip and apply the paint onto the clay pot. Easy peasy! This is my method, you can certainly use a paintbrush if you like.

There is a total of 3 coats of paint on each pot. I just kept adding another coat until I got the look I wanted.

Once the paint was dry, I sprayed each pot with a sealer. This will help to prevent scratches that happen very easily.

Craft Painting Tip

Milk jug caps are the perfect repurpose item for paint projects. I just add a little dab of paint into each cap which keeps me from using too much. Once the paint dries, you can peel it out and reuse the cap.

Step 2 Attach the wire

Before adding the floral foam and moss, go ahead and string a long piece of floral wire through the pot. This is used to attach the clay pot to the wreath form. There is a note about this in the next step.

Use a longer piece than you may need. I’d rather have too much than not enough. Simply run the wire through the top and through the drainage hole in the bottom of the pot.

Step 3 Adding the Styrofoam and Moss

Next, I began preparing each pot. First I measured the floral foam on the pot to see how to cut it. I wound up cutting it in half and then trimming it to fit.

The floral foam wedged into the pot nice and snug so there was no need to use hot glue to make it stay.

Then I drizzled hot glue on the top of the foam and placed moss on until it was covered well.

Notice in the second photo above that the wire has already been inserted through the pot. This is important! Take my word for it, while you can insert the wire after adding the foam and moss, it is much easier to do first. The wire will be used to attach each pot to the wreath.

Step 4 Adding the Succulents

One little dab of hot glue on the tip of the flower stem will keep it nice and secure. The stem glides into the floral foam nicely.

Step 5 Attaching the Flower Pots to the Wreath

Use both wire and hot glue to secure the pretty clay pots onto the wreath form.

First, play around to determine your placement. The pots don’t balance well on a grapevine wreath as you might imagine but you will be able to get a good idea of where to place each pot.

Wire each pot to the wreath first by slipping both ends of the wire through the grapevine wreath form and twisting them together to secure it in place. Pull the wire tight and then twist the two ends together.

Then add some hot glue onto the spot where the pot touches the wreath for extra security. Even though I used small pots, they still need that touch of glue to hold them into place.

In order to get the wire as tight as possible, wrap both ends in opposite directions then twist on the top side of the wreath, just under the pot. Then wrap again and twist again. Secure the end by twisting a few times and tucking the end into the grapevine. 

Be sure to turn your pots in all different directions and not all face the same way.

In places where one pot touched another pot, I glued the two pots together for extra staying power.

Acrylic paint is great to use on terracotta pots. It adheres well and can be sealed when you are finished painting.

How do you seal a a painted clay pot?

Use a spray on sealer which you can find at craft stores or home improvement stores. You can also use the Outdoor Mod Podge and paint it on as a sealer.
