Simple Valentines Tablescape
My Valentines Tablescape this year is simple using things I already own with the exception of live flowers for the centerpiece.
I was determined not to spend a penny on my Valentines Tablescape this year. Hubby and I are taking the Financial Peace University Class at our church and having a ball doing it. Of course we have indulgences but they are extremely carefully chosen, like the live flowers I purchased for the centerpiece on this table!
BEING FRUGAL WITH DECOR
It is easy to keep expenses down when you transition home decor from one season to the next. Mixing and matching the dishes and table decor you own will allow you to set pretty tables for each season without going out to spend money every time.
For some reason we tend to spend very little on Valentine’s Day in our home. It helps that I am not a fan of those mixed chocolate candy’s so popular at Valentine’s. Creating a pretty table and sharing a home cooked meal we make together suits us just fine. Of course chances are really good we may indulge in a nice dinner out too but we don’t miss setting the mood at home first.

COLOR COMBINATIONS
My color choices are the result of mixing and matching from my collection of dishes and chargers until I found a combination I was happy with for a Valentine theme. I was trying to stay away from making red the dominate color since I did that last year which you can see here.
PLATE STACK
The plate stack begins with a black round woven place mat which is topped with a scalloped edge white charger. White basket weave dishes are topped with red square salad plates. The cute little red cupcake stands are a clearance find but I don’t remember where I found them.
A single fork is tucked under a plain red napkin ring securing the black and white buffalo check cloth napkins. If those napkins look familiar, it is because I also used them in my Mixed Plaids Christmas Tablescape you can see right here.
CANDLES SET THE MOOD
Did you see the movie A League of Their Own? Catch it on Prime here. Well if you know the movie then you know the quote “There’s no crying in baseball!” In the exact same tone as that quote you can say ” There’s no Valentines without candles!”
Candles are cheap and easy decor and a must have on a romantic table setting, don’t you agree?
I used a mixture of candle holders with battery and wax candles for mood lighting around the live flowers. A red cloth napkin is folded as a rose and placed under an upside down water goblet used as a candle holder. It is reminiscent of the movie Beauty and the Beast, one of my hubby’s favorite movies so this little touch is for him. We prefer the 1991 cartoon Disney version. Catch it on Prime here.

A mixed floral rose bouquet from the grocery store is showcased as the centerpiece in a dollar store glass vase. Simple and inexpensive but perfect for the occasion.
It truly is a simple Valentines Tablescape. Little touches of red make the pop and the buffalo plaid napkins added some fun. Candles and live flowers are always a must for Valentine’s. There is nothing expensive or fancy schmancy on this table so it is perfect for a quiet evening at home with just the two of us or even for family or friends to join us.

When I set a pretty table in the kitchen, I try to serve meals for a few days at it before it put it all away. We enjoy the festive atmosphere and it makes the evening meal more lively. The Valentine’s tables are always the most fun for us.

your table is lovely and so romantic too. I’m with you about using candles. They add such a warm elemenat to a table and are an inexpensive way to cretae a mood for your meal. Your table is sophisticated and romantic. I love using what we already have to create something new too.Pinned, it’s a pleasure to hop with you, Happy Valentines Day! hugs!
Shirley, I love how you use items you already own. It’s such a great way to enjoy the holidays without spending money. The rose napkin fold is so pretty & I love all the candles. Happy to hop with you again.
Thank you Michelle. We know how to be frugal, don’t we! I just happened to find some dishes on clearance yesterday, an entire set! New plans in the works!
This is beautiful and a wonderful example that we don’t need to go out and break the bank!
Congratulations on taking “ Financial Peace University”! My husband and I took it years ago and it changed our lives. Unbelievably we now have a 250 truck, 5th wheel trailer and Brand new Audi all from using the principal’s taught in that class. All we purchased with cash free and clear. It does take patience and time but except for our mortgage, we are debt free. Be aware that your credit score will suffer because they actually WANT you to have revolving credit! We wanted to live these principles for a long time before trusting ourselves to any type of credit card again.
God’s blessings on you and your family.
Glenda, thank you for sharing your testimony about FPU. We are pretty excited about our plan to become debt free and live like no one else so we can live like no one else as Dave says. We just paid off the first debt in the snowball so we are well on the way!
Such a pretty centerpiece! You’re right, there is nothing like fresh flowers and candles at Valentines Day!
Your cupcakes have me drooling! Doesn’t help that they are displayed so beautifully❤️Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day,
Thank you Ann. Fresh flowers make us feel special.
Such a pretty floral arrangement for a centerpiece for your Valentine’s Day table! I love how you placed the rosette napkin under your inverted water goblet / candle holder. As always it’s a treat to blog hop with you. Hoping your Valentine’s Day celebration is extra sweet. ♥
Thank you Mary. My hubby recognized I put the rose under the glass for him. He loves Beauty and The Beast and I love the fact that he loves it.
Congratulations on keepin g your committment to not buy additional decor, with the exception of the roses. Black/white/red seems to be very popular this holiday and I’m getting lots of ideas. The red mini cake stands are so cute and there are so many occasions that you can use them for. Thanks for sharing all of our pictures along with the links to our blogs.
Sandra, it was a challenge not to spend money but I made it! We will see if I can keep that trend this year! Thanks!
Hi Shirley, such a fun filled table with black and white with red. Using what you have is always a great idea, shopping your house. I repurpose so many things. The floral arrangement is lovely and I did notice the rose napkins Under wine goblets. I would love a cupcake.
I especially loved you sharing photos to each blogger’s tablescape.
Linda, my hubby loves the movie Beauty and the Beast so the rose napkins under glass were my little note to him. Thankfully he did realize that which made me smile. Repurposing is really a fun thing to do especially when we challenge ourselves. There will be more cupcakes soon!
So pretty. I love the black and white plaid.
Shirley, your table is so pretty with the black and red. Such a great color combination for Valentine’s Day! Great to hop with you – and I love how you included the photos with all the blog hop links. Have a Happy Valentine’s Day!
Shelley
Shirley, you have created a classic table using what you have. The plate stack topped with the cupcake stand is perfect for the special holiday. I agree that candles create an ambiance without costing a fortune. I really love the upside down water goblet with the rose fold napkin, a sweet little detail. Happy Valentine’s Day.
Thank you for including all the preview photos!
Thank you Pam. Turning a water goblet over to use as a candle holder is such a simple thing to do, isn’t it! Proves everything doesn’t have to cost a fortune especially when those goblets came from the dollar store too!
Shirley, you are so right about candlelight being a must for Valentine’s. I love your elegant rose napkin in the upside down glass. Very creative! I agree fresh flowers make a tablescape special.
You have put together a lovely table with things you already have. Thanks so much for the source list.
Pinned for future reference.
Thanks also for all the picture links of each bloggers table. Wow, I am impressed!
Hi Bonnie, Candle light and roses just seem so right for Valentine’s! It’s a good ‘excuse’ to indulge in fresh flowers.
Shirley, I so admire your commitment to using what you have here. It’s a wonderful creative exercise to mix and match and come up with fresh ideas, and you’ve done a fabulous job of it with your Valentine table. I love the cupcake pedestals on the center of your plate stack. Black is such a classic to add to any table, but it pairs especially well with the red and white. Happy February and Happy Valentine’s!
Rita, thank you so much. Red and Black were our wedding colors which shamefully I had forgotten until I was creating this table. It was fun and challenging to work through the mix and match process. I made a giant mess in the dining room! So fun!
I love your simple table. It was nice hopping with you.
Shirley, I love the high contrast with the black, white and red. And, great minds think alike in regard to the rose fold napkin! I placed mine in bowls, but really like your idea of placing them under glasses a la Beauty and the Beast — clever girl! Always enjoy table hopping with you.
Debbee, yes, I saw you also did the rose folded napkins as did several other of our Valentine’s table stylist. I love that because it is such a simple little touch to create basically for free.
Wow! Look at you gathering all of the photos to add to your post today! There is nothing wrong with using what you have! I admire you for taking on the Financial Peace University! Stay strong and keep it up! Your table had all of the elements of a Valentine’s table with red and white and flowers and treats! My husband and I don’t do much special for Valentine’s Day, either, it’s more important to show one another love every day of the year! Thanks for joining in another hop!
Hi Chloe, so far so good with Financial Peace University. It’s kind of fun and challenging at the same time. We have been laughing at the fact that we didn’t include Valentines in the February budget but we did include dinner out so Yay! We generally are very low key with Valentine’s also so will probably prepare a meal together which is always fun.
Hi Shirley, I like your thinking…..it is so fun and some times challenging to design another tablescape from pieces you already have. It is a real challenge to come up with something that makes it look totally different, but it is so much more fun and rewarding. I try to do the same and if anything, I end up sewing new placemats or napkins and mix and match the various dinnerware sets to create a whole new tablescape. I love it. Your table really makes a stunning statement for pieces that you just remixed. I love your choice of colors for your fresh flower arrangement. That hint of lime green in some of the flowers really adds the pop of color and contrasts so well against the reds and the bold black color in your placemat and the black and white buffalo check napkins. Truly a stunning table. Keep on remixing! Happy Valentine’s Day.
Thank you Marsha. Isn’t it nice that mixing and matching doesn’t mean exact same patterns. I fell in love with that particular bouquet of flowers from the grocery store because of the addition of contrasting colors and flowers with the roses. It has been nice to have fresh flowers on the breakfast table. It makes everyone feel special.
Shirley, your floral centerpiece is beautiful and complements your pretty tablescape so well. How thoughtful that you included all of our photos! Blessings, Cecilia @My Thrift Store Addiction
Thank you Cecilia. We have enjoyed having fresh flowers in the breakfast nook this week for sure.
I love the black, white and red combo. The centerpiece flowers are great and I love the roses under the stemware.
Thank you Liz. It was all such fun to put together. We have enjoyed the flowers and my hubby loved the rose under the glass too.
Hi Shirley, you had me at black and white, my favorite combination and it’s perfect with red for Valentine’s Day! Your setting is simple yet sophisticated, and my favorite part is the clever way you place a napkin rose under an upside down wine glass, and they mimic the roses in your centerpiece, so cute! Save me a cupcake please! Oh and thank you for putting a photo of each of our tables at the end of your post, that really makes the links tempting, so smart!!
Jenna, thank you for those kind words. Black and white do seem to make the list of sophisticated mix of colors. The red gave the fun loving feel for Valentines. Let’s have cupcakes and coffee!
