Kid Friendly Mardi Gras Party
Throw a Kid Friendly Mardi Gras party with some simple touches of decor and great ideas for food.

Sunday dinner does not always mean pot roast and gravy. We had the most fun recently when we gathered the gang for a Sunday afternoon Mardi Gras Party!
We don’t live in New Orleans or the surrounding area but that didn’t stop us from having our own Mardi Gras party at home! Any excuse will do, right!

Parties always mean good food and Mardi Gras takes that to another level with menu items steeped in deep traditions Louisiana style. Any time we invite the family over for a Low country boil, they don’t hesitate to load the car and come on!
It’s all about the food when it comes to Mardi Gras also known as Fat Tuesday so let’s begin with our party menu.
Family Friendly Mardi Gras Party Menu
- Low Country Boil
- Biscuit Biegnets (recipe below)
- King Cake
- Lime Sherbet Punch (recipe below)
- Candy Buffet

King Cake
King Cake is a must-have for any Mardi Gras celebration. The colors all have a special meaning. Purple represents justice. Green represents faith and gold represents power.
Let’s make some Mardi Gras Party Food!
What would a Mardi Gras party be without beignets? A beignet is essentially deep-fried dough such as a fritter or a doughnut.
You will find them plenteous in the cajun country around Louisiana. If you ever make a trip to New Orleans, be sure to have a fresh beignet. We made ours the easy way but they make theirs from scratch.

How To Make Biscuit Biegnets
- Canned biscuits (we used the small biscuits)
- Vegetable Oil
- Powdered Sugar
Note: ingredient quantities depend entirely on the number of guests you expect. We used about half of a bag of powdered sugar to coat 30 cut-up biscuits.
Cut each biscuit into quarters.
Pour the powdered sugar into a paper bag.
Fry the cut-up biscuits until golden brown in hot oil. Drain on paper toweling.
Toss the drained, hot biscuits in the bag of powdered sugar to coat.
Serve and enjoy! Make plenty because these disappear quickly!
Set Up A Mardi Gras Photo Booth
Mardi Gras is such a fun, festive and colorful celebration. Setting up a photo booth is a great idea to capture the memories.

A few simple supplies will make a colorful photo booth for your Fat Tuesday celebration.
- Masquerade masks
- Colorful Mardi Gras Beads
- Silly, colorful hats
- Feathery colorful boa’s to wrap around your neck
We simply took a dollar store paper Mardi Gras hat, turned it over, and stuffed it with cotton pillow filler. Then draped it with dozens of beads we found at Oriental Trading.
Finally, we stuck each piece of our Mardi Gras photo booth kit from Oriental Trading into the hat. Our whimsical photo prop hat would also make a fun table centerpiece!

Our photo booth was the hot spot because it’s always fun to pose with props for fun photos. Don’t you just love that purple fedora we found at Oriental Trading!

There is an interesting story about that particular baseball. While the teen boys were outside throwing it back and forth, their Mom’s minivan somehow got injured. The back glass was broken out. I can honestly say, it was a first. We have been a baseball family forever and never had a broken window.

One of my favorite things about our Family Friendly Mardi Gras party was the candy buffet! What does that tell you about me?
I was able to keep true to the colors by using gold-wrapped Reese’s. The purple wrapped butter mints are from Oriental Trading and those pretty green M&M’s are mint! The children all took home candy bracelets and necklaces as well as some gold-wrapped chocolate coins.
Sherbet Punch Easy Recipe
We served Sherbet Punch for a fun green beverage. It’s a very simple recipe that has been gracing party tables for many years.
- 2 Qts. lime sherbet
- (2) 2 ltr. ginger ale or your favorite citrusy soda, chilled
- (1) 46 oz. can pineapple juice, chilled
Partially thaw the sherbet for just a few minutes. Scoop the sherbet into a punch bowl.
Slowly pour the pineapple juice over the sherbet followed by (1) ltr. of the soda. Reserve the second ltr. of soda to refill the punch bowl when needed.
