Ingredients
1head of cabbage
18 ozpkg. Ham pieces
2CupsChicken broth or water
1tsp.salt
1tsp.sugar
Instructions
Cut the cabbage into bite-size pieces using a large sharp knife and a cutting board.
Bring the chicken broth to a boil in a large pot or Dutch oven.
Add the ham pieces to the water or broth.
Add the chopped cabbage to the Dutch oven with the broth and ham. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Then toss in the sugar. Stir well and allow to return to a boil.
Allow to boil gently until the cabbage has become tender, stirring often. It should take about 30-45 minutes for your cabbage soup to be ready. You can add the lid once your cabbage has boiled down beneath to top of the Dutch oven. The cabbage will turn a lighter color and become tender. You may need to add water to keep the cabbage covered so you will have plenty of juice for your soup. You can either add water or more chicken broth if you have it available but do not allow all of the liquid to boil out.
